Four Excellent Reference Books for the Catholic Web
Site Developer
This page suggests four excellent reference books which
Catholic web site owners can really benefit from. The
Dictionary of Saints and Compendium of the Social Doctrine
of the Church [for referring to Catholic matters]; and
Business Style and Usage and The World Almanac [for business
and secular matters].
Dictionary of Saints
This book, written by John J. Delaney, is a very good book to
refer to when you are writing articles on religious life,
spirituality, Catholic Church history, and influential saints
and martyrs in the Church. The main content of this book are
the biographical sketches made on the blesseds and saints of
the Catholic Church, from A to Z. Aside from these, there is
featured an alphabetical listing of the saints as patrons and
intercessors; as patrons of countries and places; and their
symbols in art. After this featured listing, there is also
a chronological chart of popes and world rulers. Then the Roman
Calendar and the Byzantine Calendar of saints are featured.
What is good about this Dictionary of Saints is that it is a
handy book to have. Most dictionaries of Saints are often
presented in two to three volumes. This Dictionary of Saints
by John J. Delaney is brief, but concise, and all important
details are compacted in one book.
Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church
This came out recently and is a very good summmary of the
many social teachings of the Church. Instead of having so many
Church documents to refer to, this book compiles the many
essential teachings of the Church's social doctrine.
The book is organized very well. The table of contents is
patterned in the same way as the Catechism of the Catholic
Church. For specific areas of question, one can refer to the
index, which is well organized into major topics and then
subdivided into specific and particular social concerns. From
the first major topic, "Abortion" to the last major topic,
"Youth", you can find whatever relevant information the Church
teaches about them.
The Wall Street Journal Essential Guide to Business Style
and Usage
For Catholic web site owners to refer to the business side of
their informational web site, this is a good reference to have.
This book teaches the proper use of business terms according to
The Wall Street Journal chief style editor Paul R. Martin. For
example, we often see the acronym B2B used referring to
business-to-business commerce. This book teaches that the proper
usage and style is b-to-b.
This book is for anyone who writes, and in the context of the
Net, it is certainly for those writing content also from a
internet-business perspective. Here in this book, we will learn
if a hyphen or none is appropriate for a compound business term.
Also, the right plural forms and the proper capitalizations of
terms can also be learned.
The World Almanac and Book of Facts
The World Almanac has always updated information and data that
you will need in order to be uptodate and informed. You need
not have the latest year; one can settle for past editions at
a lower price (the information won't be that much outdated).
It is good to have a copy for writing purposes and then update
it next time as the information in your copy gets too outdated.
When writing content and developing substantial information,
it is good to be aware of world information, as a backgrounder
and context for your writing on the Web. An almanac can help
guide us into very important data and information that we need
to be aware of when writing an article that deals with the
present times. Also, it would help us a great deal in cutting
online costs since we can refer to this book offline. And when
we need to include some information from the Almanac, we can
place the necessary data in our text editors for uploading when
all information in the HTML page is completed.
